CONGLETON picked up their first league points of the season at the expense of a Gate side who were competitive for most of the game.

The visitors started brightly, but Richard Bailey gave Congleton the lead, against the run of play, after 11 minutes.

Gate were denied an equaliser when Sam Farrow’s header from a corner by Russ McKenna was superbly saved by Matthew Conkie.

The visitors pressed after the break, but Danny Docherty caught them pushing forward to score breakaway goals in the 70th and 79th minutes.

McKenna’s men try for their first win of the season at home to Silsden tomorrow (7.45pm).

Gate: Worrell, Nay, McKenna, Bartlett, Gwin, Benfield, Forbes, Farrow, Kusaloka, Bamba, Harries; Subs: Rooney, Cummings, Thornley, Taylor.
