GATE only had 12 players at Colne on a night of traffic chaos and crashed to defeat, though it could have been very different.

Indeed, they looked to have the measure of the home side in the first half, despite having to play uphill in the first.

Chris Bennett headed wide, and Tom Bartlett and Sam Farrow shot over, while the Gate defence coped with everything the home side threw at them.

However, Dominic Craig broke the deadlock on 40 minutes, sending the visitors into the dressing rooms a goal down for the first time in 310 minutes after three clean sheets.

Andy Richards went close to an equaliser but his effort was cleared off the line, while Colne keeper Chris Thompson was called into action several times and was relieved to see Chris Bennett’s shot bounce out off the inside of a post. Colne took full advantage of the let-off as Mark Threlfall tucked away the second goal on 68 minutes.

Gate piled on pressure, despite an injury to Stuart Horn, but as they threw men forward Andrew Tinker netted the third with a minute left.

n AFC Blackpool were denied three North West Counties premier division points by Daniel White’s late equaliser at Ashton Athletic last night.
