Tommy Spurr, Wes Burns, Ged Garner and Ashley Nadesan scored against the Slovakian side in the first of two games on Town’s pre-season tour, though Conor McAleny and Jack Sowerby missed the match after picking up knocks in training.

Barton said: “I’m a little bit disappointed it was not eight, nine or 10-1 because I felt we were good enough to get that. On another day you’d expect your Paddy Maddens, Jason Holts and Bobby Grants to put the chances they had in the first half in the back of the net.

“The really pleasing thing for me is the combinations – some of the one-touch and two-touch play in and around the final third.

“I thought Ash Hunter was probably the stand-out player. He showed some real touches of quality and that is because of the work he is doing on the training ground. We felt he was only contributing to the offensive stuff and not doing a shift for the team.

“We have asked them to do certain things, and it is great to see them taking things from the training ground on to the pitch and getting their rewards. If you get those offensive lads working hard defensively, you have a right good chance.”
