High tempo is the key for free-scoring Pool

That’s according to Pool boss Gary Bowyer, who was delighted with his players’ relentless finish to the game in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Newport County.

The win meant the Seasiders, who have only been beaten once at Bloomfield Road this season, scored four at home for the third league game in a row.

Manager Bowyer said: “We were clinical in front of goal again. We’ve created a hell of a lot of chances and that’s full credit to the players.

“At half-time I think there were one or two feeling sorry for themselves and I just told them to up the intensity and up the tempo.

“We know what we have here and how we start the second half, so we took confidence from that and really pushed on.”

The three points took Blackpool back into the play-off zone ahead of two cup games in four days.

They face a home tie against Brackley Town in the second round of the FA Cup on Saturday before travelling to face Doncaster in the second round of the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday.

While Bowyer’s side face three games in the space of eight days, he has no concerns about their fitness levels.

“There is immense character and spirit in this group,” he added. “The fitness levels were tremendous and we finished really, really strongly on Saturday. We ran ourselves into the ground.

“At home we’re very, very clinical and I’ve been delighted with that. We need to carry on working hard to transfer that on to the road.”

Blackpool’s second goal against Newport came via a Jack Payne volley – his first goal for the club and one that has been a long time coming according to Bowyer.

He said: “Jack’s goal was due. We’ve been on to him because we need goals from all over the pitch – we can’t just rely on the strikers.

“There was only Jack (Payne), Danny (Pugh) and Clark (Robertson) who hadn’t scored but we’re really happy different people are contributing.”
