Grant proud to face his Liverpool heroes

Grant played the first 45 minutes of the game in a new position wide on the right and the Liverpool fan said it was a privilege to play against Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Despite not being happy with the scoreline, Grant says the players will move on and are focused on tomorrow’s game at National League North side Salford City.

He said: “It is not (the result) we wanted but listen – we were playing Liverpool

“They are a Premier League side. They have a world-class manager and a world-class players, and that showed out there.

“I’m a Red. I’m a massive Red and it was a great privilege to play against Liverpool.

“We are not very happy that we were punished 5-0 but it is our first game . We will take the positives away from it and we will move on to Saturday.”

And Grant says the experience of playing against Liverpool will make him a better player.

He added: “The manager (Steven Pressley) asked me to play the wide right of a 4-4-2 and do my defensive responsibilities, which I am fully capable of doing.

“To be doing it against Liverpool isn’t ideal, but I will learn massively from it and it will improve me as a player.”

And the forward says he is fighting fit and believes Town’s intense pre-season training will allow them to hit the ground running when the League One campaign kicks-off at Northampton on August 6.

He said: “I’m feeling very strong and very fit. We have put the work in on the training ground and in the runs.”

“We’ve been doing double sessions. It hasn’t been easy but we will feel the benefit of it, and hopefully come the first sessionwe will be ready to hit the ground at a full canter.”

n One of last season’s loan stars will not be returning to Highbury anytime soon.

Bristol City forward Wes Burns, who scored five goals in a 14-game loan spell at Fleetwood at the end of last term, has turned down several options to join Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen on a season-long loan.

The Championship Robins have the option to recall the 21-year-old in January.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes worked with Burns at Ashton Gate and handed the striker his senior debut while he was manager at there.

The forward, who earned a call-up for Wales’ pre-Euro 2016 training camp in Portugal on the back of his form at Town, went straight into the Dons’ squad for last night’s Europa League qualifier against Latvian club Ventspils.

McInnes said: “Wes is a fantastic young talent who can play right across the front line.”

“He has got a brilliant attitude and plenty of motivation to do well with us.

“I would like to thank Bristol City and Lee Johnson for their help in making the deal happen as Wes had plenty of options.”
