Goal-hungry Burns out to learn from Ameobi

Manager Steven Pressley brought the strike duo in to increase low-scoring Town’s firepower last month and 21-year-old Burns is pleased he helped ex-Newcastle and Bolton striker Ameobi to open his Cod Army account in the 2-1 victory over promotion-chasing Gillingham on Tuesday.

Burns netted his second goal in as many games in the third minute and teed-up Ameobi with a sublime cross six minutes later.

The pacy forward is keen to take on board any know-how the former Nigeria international can pass on and hopes they can continue scoring when the Cod Army host Sheffield United on Saturday.

Burns said: “I will learn a lot from Shola. He is great to have around the dressing room.

“He has a big personality. He is just one of those big men of football that you can learn a lot from.

“He’s been there, has done everything and has played in some of the best stadiums in the world.

“I got him back on the goal train and, like me, he has come here to help us score goals. For him to start scoring again is great.

“I think it is important to have a person like that around throughout your career in football.

“You can never say you have learned everything in football. Everyday is a day to learn something new, which is what I will be doing when I’m training with him and playing with him.”

Burns’ second goal for the club had a hint of fortune in the swirling wind at Highbury as his corner clipped a Gills player before flying past keeper Stuart Nelson.

It was only the Welshman’s third of the campaign and he says he is determined to carry on hitting the back of the net to help the Cod Army avoid relegation from League One.

He said: “I just want to score goals. When I came in I had a meeting with the gaffer and he said they have been lacking goals in games, and this is what I have come here to do.

To be on the scoresheet again was good – as fortunate as it was.

“It was good to get another goal.”
