Goal ace eyes late run for Fleetwood

Town closed the gap to just two points thanks to their 2-1 victory over Sheffield United.

With 11 games still to play, Graham Alexander’s side are desperate to find greater consistency.

But Morris believes a run of results now could make the end of the season very interesting indeed.

“We know what we can do as a team,” he said.

“We dropped points on Tuesday night (at Chesterfield). It was important to get back from that and we did.

“There’s 11 games now. If we can go on a run, it’s a great time to do that.

“Who knows what can happen.”

Morris scored the opener at Bramall Lane before Nick Haughton bagged his first professional goal to seal the win – Town then fought a strong rearguard action after the break to secure the spoils.

“It was another great performance from the lads,” said Morris.

“It was a backs to the wall job for the last five or 10 minutes.

“We handled it really well and showed how far we’ve come.

“To go to a place like that, a big stadium and a big crowd, and get a result ... it’s a big moment.”

Fleetwood have led on a big stage before – 2-0 up at Deepdale and 1-0 ahead at Stadium MK.

Both of those matches ended in defeat. That wasn’t the case in front of more than 18,000 at Bramall Lane, Morris insisting Town had learned from the earlier mistakes.

He said: “We’ve been to Preston, where we went ahead, and we were ahead at MK Dons but we couldn’t hold on.

“To do that against Sheffield United and take the points, it was fantastic for us.

“We’ve built from those other games. We’ve got the extra experience. We’ve made it count.”

And the on-loan Blackburn winger knows what the victory means to the Fleetwood fans, no matter where they finish the campaign.

Morris added: “It must be mad for them to see a win at Bramall Lane, knowing where they have come from. I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Morris is now Fleetwood’s leading scorer, with six for the season, having found the net in the last two games.

Not that topping the goalscorers’ table is the most important thing for the 23-year-old, who found himself playing on the left flank of a five-man midfield in Sheffield.

We changed the shape and I think that’s worked for us,” he said.

“I’ve scored a good goal but the three points are more important.

“It’s a great pass from Jamie Proctor, another assist from him.

“It was a nice finish and it’s nice to get another goal for myself.

“It’s a great finish from Nick too, and going 2-0 up away from home was the perfect start for us.”

Fleetwood now have back-to-back home games as they look to improve on one of the division’s most inconsistent records.

They have won exactly the same number of games as they have lost in their debut League One season but have won three from their last six matches.

Rochdale are the visitors on Saturday followed by Coventry City on Tuesday evening.

The following weekend Town travel to FA Cup giantkillers Bradford City.
