Fylde full of confidence for cup test

Manager Dave Challinor’s criticism of his team’s firepower has been well and truly answered but he is looking for reinforcements to keep the goals flowing at Rushall Olympic in tomorrow’s FA Carlsburg Trophy tie.

Eleven-goal top scorer Matty Blinkhorn is the latest to be ruled out with a broken hand, leaving the manager lacking options of front, but however depleted his side it’s no surprise that Challinor says his side go into the second qualifying round in Walsall “full of confidence”.

After some flak from their boss for failing to take chances, Fylde have responded with three performances he branded “excellent”, including their best display of the season against Whitby last Saturday and the eyebrow-raising 10-0 trouncing of Droylsden on Tuesday.

Challinor said: “The game really opened up when Droylsden had one sent off but we were clinical and ruthless. That was biggest win I’ve ever been involved in at any level of football.

“It was especially pleasing as it was a horrible, sponge-like pitch, which made it hard to keep your feet. It was a game in which we had everything to lose and we did a good professional job.

“You have to move the ball quickly and enjoy creating chances. It means we will be full of confidence in shooting for Saturday.

“We have been back to our best in the last three games. We haven’t always stuck chances away and it’s come back to haunt us a bit, but our confidence has now gone up another notch.”
