Fleetwood boss John Sheridan had a typically no- nonsense attitude to his manager of the month nomination '“ 'It does not win you anything, does it?'

Town keeper Alex Cairns is also shortlisted in the player of the month category for the March awards to be announced on Friday.Sheridan is pleased with the recognition for his work in an unbeaten March, which saw Town win three League One matches, having drawn the other two. A fourth straight win over Bristol City on Monday has lifted Town to 13th with 51 points and stretched their unbeaten run to seven since Sheridan replaced Uwe Rosler in February. Having initially predicted a relegation battle which would go the wire, Sheridan takes his side to promotion- chasing Rotherham on Saturday all but safe with six games remaining. Vying with Sheridan for the League One manager of the month award are fellow firefighters Dan Micciche of MK Dons and Rochdale’s Keith Hill as well as high-flying Wigan’s Paul Cook. The award would be of no great importance to Sheridan, whose main prize is making Fleetwood’s third tier status mathematically certain. He said:”Manager of the month doesn’t mean a lot. Obviously it is a bit of recognition for me but I applaud my players.“The most important thing is that we carry on playing, winning and getting as high up the table as possible.” Keeper Cairns is nominated after conceding only one goal all month . Having kept Town’s first clean sheet of the year at Charlton on March 17, Cairns has gone on to record five successive shutouts. Also on the player of the month shortlist are Wigan centre-half Chet Dunkley, Peterborough hotshot Jack Marriott and Portsmouth’s Brett Pitman.Sheridan says Cairns would be the first to credit those in front of him, with the switch back to 3-5-2 another factor. The Town boss said: “Chris is keeping the ball out of the net and he is part of a very good team.”
