Fleetwood Town wide man's message for his Highbury team-mates

Fleetwood Town winger Wes Burns was left looking at his side’s performance rather than that of the officials in the wake of their 1-1 draw with Crewe Alexandra.

Burns scored Town’s goal last weekend in a match featuring some contentious decisions from referee Tom Nield.

Instead, the Welshman opted to challenge his team-mates to improve so that any similar decisions ultimately become irrelevant.

He told the club’s website: “I think we could obviously play a little bit better to take those decisions out of his hands.

“If we were a little bit more clinical when we had our chances the game’s probably out of sight anyway.”

The goal at Crewe was Burns’ second of the season, following on from his effort in last month’s win against Plymouth Argyle.

While he might not find the net that often, he has shown in the past that when he does contribute goals, they can come in some style.

That wasn’t quite the case against Crewe but that was something which pleased the 26-year-old.

He said: “It’s one of those ones where I kind of messed up the chance myself.

“I took a loose touch and the defender has come across, but I think he’s waiting for the keeper to come and collect it so I’ve just sort of pounced on that opportunity and hooked my foot around it and it’s gone in, so I’ll take those.

“I’ve always been an attacker growing up, but I can fill in whenever I’m needed but I do prefer playing further forward.

“Now Tom (Edwards) is back fit, I know if I want to play on the front line, I need to add goals and assists.”

Town have confirmed that striker Ged Garner has been recalled from his loan spell at Gateshead with immediate effect.

The 22-year-old has signed a contract extension at Highbury until the end of the season.

He made nine appearances during his loan spell away, scoring four goals and assisting four more.
