Fleetwood Town striker plays through the pain barrier

The 29-year-old Sheffield United loanee scored twice in Town’s 5-0 win over Scunthorpe United on Wednesday night.

Now the forward is heading to Charlton Athletic bang in form but his recovery will be key.

He had come off during the 2-2 draw with Rochdale last weekend because of a back injury but is taking medication to ensure he can keep rattling home the goals.

He said: “It was a back injury, I had a bit of illness Saturday morning; I was on antibiotics.

“I’ve just been cracking on with them but I’m on the mend and can’t complain!

“I have been carrying an injury and I was not well on Saturday at all.

“That is why I came off so early, I wasn’t right.

“It is the effort, putting it in for the team and putting your body on the line.

“I think that is the mentality the manager (Joey Barton) wants.”

Evans believes Town’s shift to a 4-4-2 line-up in midweek suited him with Paddy Madden alongside him up front and the other goalscorers, Wes Burns and Ash Hunter, deployed on the wing.

Evans said: “It was nice to get on the scoresheet.

“I think that result has been coming for a while now.

“If you look at the way we have been training and the way we set up, our formation was a bit different with two up front.

“I personally found that much more lucrative.

“Then you have the runners of Paddy, Wes and Ash Hunter around you which makes it so much easier.

“It is going to be an interesting season if we carry on going the way we are going.”

Conor McAleny, Chris Long and Bobby Grant all came off the bench in midweek with Evans admitting that competition for places aided Town’s rout.

He said: “There is a lot of competition.

“I think that is why performance is key.

“You know there is someone always ready to take your position.

“If you look at the lads that are coming on and seeing the game out to keep the clean sheet and win the second half for us, it is just testament to the club.”

The aim now is to back up Wednesday’s win with another three points on the road this afternoon.

Evans said: “Our away results have been outstanding.

“It is just a real team effort; you look in the changing room, everyone is buzzing and we take that to Charlton.”
