Fleetwood Town midfielder gets set to face his former club

Fleetwood Town’s Callum Camps certainly isn’t the sentimental type as he prepares to face his old club.

The midfield man joined Town on a free transfer over the summer from today’s opposition, Rochdale, having spent all of his career at Spotland until then.

Camps has hit the ground running since arriving on the Fylde coast, finding the back of the net four times already; exactly what boss Joey Barton was expecting of the forward-minded midfielder.

Barton’s men will be looking to stem their recent run of defeats, having lost their last three games with league losses to Peterborough United and AFC Wimbledon as well as a Carabao Cup exit to Everton.

Camps is looking forward to seeing some old friends at Spotland, including former manager Brian Barry-Murphy, of whom he has nothing but praise.

He said: “I’m not nervous, if you move to a team in the same league you’re going to come up against your old club.

“It’s going to be good to go back and see some old faces, I’ve got some good mates from over the years playing there.

“It’s going to be good to see a few faces but we’re only going there to win.

“Brian, who I’ve played with as well as been coached by, he’s class.

“From the back end of his career, he used to join in training and the way he talked to the younger lads whilst he was still playing and helped them progress was brilliant.

“I knew with everything that happened at the club, and with them appointing Murph as manager, I thought all the players would take to him.

“He’s not on bad terms with anyone. The way he talks about football and the training sessions we’d do, the way he’s got Rochdale to play, it’s all really good.

“It benefited me last season, I felt like I had a good season and I enjoyed it.”

As with all professional games at present, the match will be behind closed doors.

The 24-year-old won’t be able to show his appreciation to the Rochdale fans – or get a welcoming reception after seven years of service – but it isn’t something Camps had considered.

He said: “It doesn’t bother me to be fair, I’m not one of them that is fussed about it.

“I played under them for many years and played a good few games there. I hope they were happy with what I did whilst I was there but you just never know with fans, so I’m not too fussed.”
