Fleetwood Town midfielder concentrates on club rather than country for now

He has been catching the eye all season and qualifies for Ian Baraclough’s side through his grandmother.

The Northern Ireland boss has been in touch with the 25-year-old about a potential call-up, but at the time, Camps was nursing a slight knee injury and felt it was best to take the next chance he gets.

Camps, however, is in no rush to make the step up and knows his opportunity will come as long as he keeps doing what he has done so far in this campaign.

He told The Gazette: “I’ve spoken to him (Baraclough) when the last camp was on. A few players had pulled out injured and he rang me late on a Saturday night and said he wanted to call me up.

“At the time, I’d had problems with my knee and a scan on my knee.

“We decided that maybe not this time but he’ll keep an eye on me. I just let it be.

“It’s not down to me but if I keep training well and playing well, and hopefully performing and scoring, it’ll take care of itself.

“It’s up to the manager, he’ll pick who he wants to pick for the squad.

“I’ll just concentrate on Fleetwood for now and see where it goes from there.

“I’m a pretty laid-back person, whatever happens happens, and if I keep doing what I’m doing it’s going to open up opportunities for me. I don’t really overthink anything or make a fuss.”

Camps goes into this afternoon’s League One clash against Swindon Town second in the scoring charts with his eight goals so far.

Town will be looking to enjoy some better results than of late, having been winless in their last three league games and losing the last two.

Though Camps has enjoyed some individual accolades – and there is the potential for more – he doesn’t see himself adding to his set piece repertoire anytime soon with success from 12 yards.

He said: “I’m not on the penalties and there will be people up there who are on the penalties too.

“I’m not out to get anything, if I keep scoring then I’ll be up there, but if I don’t, hopefully the team is still doing well.

“I’m rubbish at penalties, I won’t be on them. I admit that myself, I can’t take them.

“I think about it too much with the penalties, with the free-kicks I can just hit it so I’m alright.”
