Fleetwood Town youngster Billy Crellin is keen to get games under his belt as he battles Alex Cairns and Matty Urwin for the goalkeeper's role at Highbury.

The teenager, who has previously been linked with Wolves, looks set to fight Urwin for a place on the bench behind Cairns when the new season commences against AFC Wimbledon on August 4.

Last season saw the 18-year-old win the World Cup with England’s U17s before finishing the campaign as an unused substitute on Town’s final day defeat of Walsall.

He has already warmed up for the new season by linking up with England’s U19s for their European Championship campaign.

Crellin said: “The reason why I am here is because I want to play games at a young age and get the experience.

“I want to go as high as I possibly can.”

Crellin had been given the nod on the bench last season by former Town manager John Sheridan.

With Joey Barton having taken over during the summer, Crellin hopes he is able to show the new head coach that he feels able to be involved.

He said: “I’ve enjoyed it more this year than previous years.

“I feel fitter, ready, all the lads feel the same, there has not been one bad word about the new regime.

“Everyone is buzzing for the season to start.”

Crellin, Cairns and Urwin have been put through their pre-season paces by the club’s goalkeeping coach, former Preston North End keeper David Lucas.

Given the results in pre-season so far, Town would appear to have the proverbial safe pair of hands in goal no matter who starts the season.

Speaking on the club’s goalkeeping situation, Crellin said: “You’ve got David who has played hundreds of games, Alex who has just broke through, Matty has been around and they have all got experience and give me advice, so it is brilliant working with those three.”
