The Cod Army had been set for a busy January with seven matches in League One, as well as the Papa John’s Trophy tie against Hull City a week on Tuesday.

However, the year’s first two league matches against Ipswich Town and Sunderland were suspended on New Year’s Eve following several positive Covid-19 tests.

Town go into 2021 sitting 10th in League One, three points off the play-off spots and six adrift of the automatic promotion places despite only winning one of their last seven league matches.

Speaking before the Ipswich and Sunderland call-offs, Connolly told The Gazette: “It’s been great, a few results haven’t gone our way but I think it’s going to click very soon.

“We’ve got a few good games coming up, a few good fixtures.

“Everyone is confident going into it and everyone is excited for the next few weeks.

“There’s difficult fixtures but we’ll look to pick up maximum points where we can.

“We’ve got a strong enough squad as it is but a few fresh faces won’t do any harm.

“The January window is approaching and we’ll just see what the gaffer (Joey Barton) has got in mind, if he can bring someone in.

“If he can’t then fair enough, we’ve got a strong enough squad anyway and we’ll look to kick on.

“You can see by the results that they haven’t always gone our way and we haven’t really had a run of games where we’ve won consecutively.

“We had the Plymouth and the Oxford games but I think it’s a matter of time until we click together and go on a big run.

“The aim for the end of the season is to go up, so we need to put a run of wins together and get consistent.”
