Fleetwood swoop for Chelsea teen

Fleetwood Town have moved to boost their attacking threat with the capture of Chelsea teenager Alex Kiwomya.

The wide forward arrived at Poolfoot yesterday to train with Town having agreed a one-month loan deal and goes straight into contention for a place in the side to face Doncaster on Saturday.

There is scope to extend the deal should Chelsea and Fleetwood both be happy with Kiwomya's performances.

But for now Town manager Steven Pressley is happy to have hot a deal over the line in what has been a frustrating January.

He said: "I stated the other night we were working hard on things and whoever we brought in was either better or different from what we have.

"Alex is certainly different to what we have.

"He's got electric speed, he's a wide attacker and I think he'll be a great addition to the group.

"We go into a really heavy schedule of games just now.

"It's important we have a lot of flexibility, a little depth to the group.

"We're really pleased with him as an acquisition."

The 19-year-old already has experience of League One football having been at Barnsley for a spell at the start of 2015.

That, Pressley believes, will be a bonus for Fleetwood.

The Town boss should know, having kept tabs on Kiwomya - son of former professional Andy and nephew of ex Notts County boss Chris - for more than a year.

"He's a player I've been aware of for some time," said Pressley

"I enquired about him during my previous time at Coventry.

"At that time he wasn't in a position to come out on loan.

"When he did go out he went for a short period to Barnsley.

"That in itself is a good thing, that he's already experienced his first loan, he knows what to expect and that's a good thing."

The arrival of the England under-19 internation will hopefully be the first in a string of signings with Pressley hoping to get a second over the line before Saturday's game.

"There's a couple bubbling away," he told The Gazette.

"We're hoepful on one, we might get some news on that later today.

"Progress has been good.

"I said things can move quickly in football and things progressed well from a couple of phone calls.

"It looks like we could have another in before the weekend."

And Pressley is clear where he still needs to make changes to his Fleetwood side.

He said: "I'd like to bring in one more at the top end and a defender as well to give the group real competition."
