Fleetwood players to honour Ted on emotional day

Vice-president Lowery was held in great affection by all at the club where he had volunteered since 1978. He passed away last month, aged 87, after a short illness.

Ted’s funeral will take place at 11am at Carleton Crematorium and the service is open to the public.

Lowery’s cortege is set to depart Highbury Stadium at 10.05am, with the players and staff forming a guard of honour. The service will begin at 11am.

Bearing the coffin for Ted’s final journey will be current Fleetwood players Nathan Pond, Bobby Grant, Cian Bolger, Ash Eastham and Chris Neal, along with former Town striker Jon Parkin.

Following the service, a wake will be held in the Parkside Suite at Highbury from 12.30, and again the public are invited to attend.

Town forward Wes Burns said:“Everyone will be attending and it will be a sad day for the club but hopefully it is a good send-off for Ted.”

Burns scored a historic goal for Town on Saturday – their first in a league match against neighbours Blackpool.

But the Welshman, whose previous league goal was at Blackburn Rovers in October, was disappointed his goal did not prove decisive as the Seasiders scored twice in the dying moments to seal a 2-1 victory.

Burns stressed that Town win and lose as a team as they bid to bounce back at home to high-flying Wigan on Saturday.

Burns said: “It is disappointing to concede two late goals in the fashion we did, having gone 1-0 up.

“The manager said it was just game-management that let us down in the end.

“The lads have been great since the new manager has come in. Our record shows we can keep clean sheets and see games out.

“On Saturday it just was not to be. I don’t want to point fingers – it is a team game. We win together and lose together.”

Burns could have clinched victory when he went through one on one, with Town already 1-0 up.

The frontman admitted he should have taken that chance but was delighted to end his goal drought.

He added: “I should definitely score that one, so it has been a bit of an up and down day for me.

“But I’m delighted to score. Jordy (Hiwula) probably should have scored himself but he went a bit far round the keeper and hit a post.

“As it was coming back to me, I thought I just had to make sure I got a good connection and hit the target.

“It did get a big deflection but I am definitely claiming it.

“I’m glad I was the one to get the goal, just disappointed that we could not see the game out.”
