Fleetwood hoping for midfield miracle

The Fleetwood boss could be missing as many as five first team players with Nathan Pond, Joe Davis, Antoni Sarcevic and Jimmy Ryan all doubtful for Saturday’s trip to Port Vale.

Sarcevic and Ryan are understood to be undergoing daily assessments on their injuries - blamed by boss Pressley on over-use.

Their midfield partner, Jonsson, is recovering from a knock sustained in a challenge during last week’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat.

And, the Fleetwood boss is hopeful there might be good news from the treatment room.

He said: “None of them were near playing at the weekend.

“We had no late fitness tests.

“I really am hopeful we can get them back.

“The likely one is Eggert who has more of a contact injury.

“There’s a greater chance of him coming back.”

Should Jonsson miss out Pressley is likely to have to turn to players from other positions to fill in.

At the weekend Victor Nirennold was the only recognised midfielder in the starting eleven.

Conor McLaughlin and David Ball filled the other roles and Pressley was impressed with the manner the experienced pair adapted.

Indeed, he hailed their ability to step out of their comfort zone as an example for Fleetwood’s younger players.

Pressley said: “I think both players are very intelligent and they were examples for our young players of how to adapt.

“I was really pleased with them.”

Pressley admitted his frustration at Town’s youngter players after Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Shrewsbury, which kept the club in the League One drop zone.

His remarks were directed, in particular at the likes of new boy Devante Cole and Premier League loan stars David Henen and Alex Kiwomya, whose desire to win came under scrutiny.

“It’s about decision making but also knowing the importance of the games,” explained Pressley.

“Matches like Sunday are so important to the football club.

“As young players they need to grow up quickly and understand the importance of winning football matches.

“There were chances on Sunday but we need to do better.”
