First Fleetwood win a small step for Pressley

Steven Pressley insists Fleetwood fans have seen nothing yet despite a 4-0 demolition of Burton Albion.

Town hadn’t won in League One since August – a record they put right in convincing fashion.

A brace from Bobby Grant and goals from Jamie Proctor and Ash Hunter halted a run of five league defeats as Fleetwood ran riot in the second half.

But after his first win as manager, Pressley made it clear his work has only just begun.

“You’ve not seen what I want from Fleetwood yet,” said the Scot.

“You’ve seen goals and we saw winning, which I want to see from my team.

“First half we were a little bit nervous. We didn’t pass the ball in the manner we wanted to but that’s credit to Burton, who pressurised the game very well.

“We started to see more patterns of play as the game stretched a bit and we managed to utilise the wide areas, but the most important thing was winning. I’d have taken a 1-0, a scrappy win.”

The victory was just the tonic for struggling Town, lifting them out of the drop zone and breathing confidence back into a bruised and battered side.

“I’m delighted,” said Pressley. “The most important thing for us now is winning games of football.

“We can talk about performances. We can talk about every aspect of it. But winning is all that matters to us right now.

“In our predicament, the only way you’re going to get confidence and belief is by winning games.

“This was a small step but a very important step.”

Grant’s second-half pair were the pick of the goals, the former Blackpool man also crossing to set up Proctor’s close-range opener.

And Pressley knows flair players like Grant are crucial to what he’s trying to achieve.

“There are certain players in the team because they can bring that moment, that quality,” he said.

“Bobby Grant is one of them. We introduced him on Saturday.

“The players understand there are roles and responsibilities, but if we work as hard as we do out of possession we have to have players who can make a difference. Bobby is one of those.

“I was also delighted for Proctor because I thought he led the line brilliantly.

“He made a huge contribution and was rewarded with a goal, but collectively it was a really important result.”

Town travel to Sheffield United tomorrow looking to build on Saturday’s victory. And Pressley expressed what he expected of his troops in no uncertain terms.

“We can’t get ahead of themselves,” he said. “I’ve told them they’ve got a big game Tuesday.

“They’ve got to be refuelled. I wanted them in on Sunday with water coming out of their ears.

“We have to understand Saturday was a small step.
