Fleetwood Town unhappy with referee after sharing spoils at Crewe

The Welshman's goal in Saturday's draw at Crewe Alexandra was only Burns' second in 23 games this season - but he has often had to focus on defensive duties.

The arrival of right-back Tom Edwards on loan from Stoke City has enabled Burns, who started the campaign as a makeshift wing-back, to revert to his natural role.

And Edwards was back in the side at Gresty Road on Saturday, after three weeks out, meaning there was more attacking responsibility for Burns.

And assistant manager Clint Hill praised the 26-year-old for putting the team first.

Joey Barton's number two said: “We put Wes back in the front line to try to use his pace behind their back line. We thought they would be undone by his pace.

“It was a great ball by Tom Edwards and he managed to toe-poke it in.

“We had a couple of half-chances after that and then Crewe put us under pressure with a few crosses. The lads dealt with that but were undone by a poor performance by the referee.

“Wes has done fantastic for us. He’s played a lot at right wing-back and has done a job for the team when players have been injured or suspended.

"This was an occasion to put him up and he’s rewarded us with a goal and a solid performance, so we’re pleased for him.

“We know he can do a job wherever we put him, which is great."
