FA confirm probe into missile claims at Fleetwood Town's home clash against Sheffield United

Maxwell was furious that referee Carl Boyeson awarded the Blades a penalty in injury time, when Town were 2-1 up.

Before Che Adams stepped up to convert the spot-kick, Maxwell appeared to be hit by an object thrown from behind his goal, where the Blades fans were massed.

A spokesman for the FA said: “We are aware of the suggestion that an object was thrown at the goalkeeper and will be making enquiries.”

Town manager Steven Pressley claimed after the game that the referee told Maxwell it was his own fault the missile was thrown because of his reaction to the penalty award.

Maxwell suffered a cut above his eye and Pressley said he will report the referee’s reaction.

The FA said that Professional Game Match Officials Limited deal with complaints about officials but PGMOL were unavailable for comment.

And Pressley says the officials should try a day in his shoes.

He said: “I expect better, not just from the referee himself but from the fourth official (Mark Duncan).

“He made life very hard for us in the technical area and he has got to understand how passionate we are as a management team and how much it means to us and this football club that we get the right decisions and the right points.

“It is very easy for them to make judgement but they should try being in my tracksuit.”
