Drought over for Alexander’s Town

Graham Alexander hailed the end of Fleetwood’s goal-drought, left instead to bemoan basic defensive errors after a barnstorming 3-3 draw.

He said: “The two best defences in the league go head to head and you get a 3-3 draw.

“We shot ourselves in the foot at the start of the second half with two sloppy goals.

“They were cheap goals and it’s put us on the back foot against a team who I guess will be in the top two at the end of the season.

“I thought the character shown by our players was unbelievable. They deserved to get back in the game and the quality of each of the goals was fantastic.”

The Fleetwood boss reserved special praise for Dobbie, whose late strike lifted the roof at Highbury.

He said: “He’s missed a lot of pre-season and some training since we’ve started. We just want to get him up to speed.

“We’ve dropped him off the front line for the last 15 minutes or so, trying to get him in good positions. We see those sorts of finishes all the time in training.

“I think he’s just been unlucky in recent weeks, he’s always looked the most likely to score.

“He’s had efforts gone wide, efforts saved but that one’s gone in. It was the perfect finish to get that point.”

“To get that goal, to save the point, you can see the reaction of the players, the crowd of Stephen himself and you can see it means a lot to him.”

Alexander may have been delighted with his forward line but he knows his back line can perform better.

He said: “We have to go back quite a few months to last season to see when we were that sloppy.

“There’s no great skill in their goals, it’s just basic mistakes from us. We had chances to clear for all three.”
