Reports over the last few days have suggested the former Rangers midfielder is on course to secure a permanent deal at Highbury, where he was a success on loan last season – but it is not as clear-cut as that,

The Gazette understands there have been stumbling blocks as Town looked to bring the 23-year-old Liverpudlian through the door on a permanent basis.

Rossiter was a key player for Town head coach Joey Barton in the early months of last season, making 19 appearances before a season-ending knee injury in late November. He then continued to use the club’s facilities on the road to recovery, rather than returning to Scotland.

Rossiter has since been released by Rangers, where he has spent the past four years since coming through the youth ranks at Liverpool.

It is believed the England youth international is willing to commit his future to Fleetwood. However, the club would not be able to match his wages at Ibrox.

The Town squad return to Poolfoot Farm on Monday but Rossiter has been training hard in a bid to regain full fitness. A final decision is expected once the player’s fitness has been assessed.
