He rounded the keeper from a pass by Ryan Riley, who went close himself as he hit the post from a Jake Higham corner.

After multiple changes at half-time, Gate had some defending to do after the restart and Jordan Gidley pulled off a fine double save from close range.

Gate doubled their lead when Dean Ing found the bottom right corner after some free-flowing link-up play with Jack Iley.

Burnley didn’t give up but Gate sealed victory in the final 15 minutes as left-back Higham rocketed a shot into the bottom corner with his weaker foot.

Higham then set up a second for Ing, sliding the ball through after a burst down the left.
