Davis praised for seizing chance at Fleetwood

Davis was recalled for his first league appearance since March at Wimbledon last Saturday.

Ash Eastham’s jaw-break provided Davis with his chance to start alongside captain Nathan Pond and Cian Bolger in Town’s back three.

Davis conceded a controversial penalty for fouling Tom Elliott in the 2-2 draw at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, but the 23-year-old was hailed by head coach Rosler for following in the footsteps of midfielder George Glendon and keeper Alex Cairns by waiting patiently for his chance and then taking it.

Rosler said: “It was a difficult game for Joe because they were really competitive, but I really think he did well because he has not played and he has not been in the squad for a long time.

“Again great spirit, like Alex Cairns and Gleno – they never give up.

“They have not been in the light for a while, and now Joe is coming and giving a performance like that.

“His match fitness has to keep up. That is why I took him off – because he was at the limit.

“But to come in for a game like that, I take my hat off. That was a difficult game for him and he stood up well.”

Town’s goals by Bolger and Conor McLaughlin both came from corners and Rosler was pleased to score from set-pieces.

He added: “Obviously when you have three centre-halves on the pitch you give yourself a better chance to score (from set-pieces) and I think we looked a danger.

“But I think (with) the amount of chances we had we should have won the game.”
