McDonald’s plans for Saturday’s game against Shrewsbury were thrown into turmoil when keeper Colin Doyle twisted his ankle in training and his deputy Kyle Letheren fell ill.

It left the Seasiders with only youth team stopper Myles Boney available until an emergency call to Burton boss Nigel Clough led to Dean Lyness returning on loan.

McDonald explained: “Colin rolled his ankle on Friday morning, so we got in touch with Burton and they let us loan Dean Lyness, which was great.

“Dean hadn’t played for quite a while, although I don’t think he had much of a chance with the goals.”

The 24-year-old made seven appearances on loan for the Seasiders before the turn of the year and hadn’t played since. His new deal at Bloomfield Road runs until March 22.

“We tried to bring Dean in on a full-time deal but we couldn’t get it over the line,” added McDonald.

“We’ve maintained a good relationship with Dean and Burton, and we kept him in the loop.

“I phoned Nigel Clough up and asked if I could have him, and he said yes.
