China trip postponed as Fleetwood head to Austria

Fleetwood Town have opted for an Austrian adventure rather than a pre-season trip to China, which has been postponed until the summer of 2018.

Town had intended a summer visit to China, but due to recent changes in visa requirements the club has decided to undertake further planning before travelling to the Orient next summer. In the meantime they will continue to build relationships in the Far East.

Instead the club will be returning to Austria for a week-long training camp on Sunday July 9.

The club will be based in Kossen and will play two games against German lower league opposition.

Town’s German boss Uwe Rosler took his Leeds side there two years ago. Town have been regular pre-season visitors to Austria but went to Holland instead last summer.

And after the planned trip to China was cancelled they are returning to the continent.

A club statement pledged to continue developing links with international partners.

It stated: “Uwe Rosler’s side will play two friendly matches in Austria against German opponents, which will be announced in the coming days.

“Town have been regulars in Austria for pre-season but had planned to attend China this summer. However, due to very recent changes in visa requirements the club felt it had insufficient time to deliver what was required for a successful trip.

“The club will continue to work with our international partners in developing those relationships in the Far East.

“A significant amount of work has already gone into the planning and forming of those key relationships out in China and we now have time to focus further on those partnerships and work on a visit to the country in 2018.”

Town head to Austria two days after kicking-off their pre-season against Scottish club Queen of the South at their Poolfoot Farm training complex on Friday, July 7.

Town’s first match on the continent will be on Tuesday 11 or Wednesday 12, with the second on Saturday 15.

When Town return they will host last season’s League One promotion rivals Bolton Wanderers at Highbury on July 22, with an away friendly at former boss Micky Mellon’s current National League Tranmere side on Tuesday 25.

Town’s pre-season programme will end at home to Championship side Preston North End – the former club of their coaching trio Barry Nicholson, David Lucas and Youl Mawene – on Friday, July 28.
