Charlie Mulgrew says he and all his Fleetwood Town team-mates are responsible for ending the club’s goal drought, not just the forwards.

Alex Cairns: Solid defence gives Fleetwood a platform to beat Doncaster

Town have kept clean sheets in three of their last four League One games but haven’t scored in any of them.

And tonight a Fleetwood side without a win in almost two months are at home to a Doncaster Rovers side seeking a 10th victory in 11 league games (7.45).

Town have tightened up at the back but centre-half Mulgrew insists the defenders can’t be satisfied unless they are contributing at the other end.

The 34-year-old said: “Our defensive record over the season has been good but I need to stress that’s a team thing. It’s not four defenders and a keeper – it’s a full team defending well as a team.

“Now we need to score goals but again it’s as a team. We need to create chances for the front lads, get on the end of set-pieces and be better all-round in the final third.

“We have great forward players who do a lot for the team and can score goals –but right through the team we have to create opportunities for them.

“The whole team need to score and provide assists to give the team the best chance. We defend and attack as a team and we all take responsibility.”

Since joining the club on a season-long loan for Blackburn Rovers, Glaswegian Mulgrew was enjoying a run of 20 league appearances for Town until his red card in the defeat at Oxford United 10 days ago resulted in a suspension.

The former Scotland international said: “It’s great to be in the pressurised environment of playing Saturday-Tuesday. I’m glad I’ve been able to stay fit thanks to a good pre-season at Blackburn and the management and fitness coaches here. I’m delighted to play as many games as I can.”

And Mulgrew believes tonight’s high-flying visitors have set an example Fleetwood can follow.

He explained: “It’s slight margins in this league and you can go on a run quite easily. Now the manager situation is settled, hopefully confidence can build and we can string some results together. There’s plenty of time to go in the season and we need to get on that run now and have a good end.

“Doncaster are on a great run but we are good side ourselves, and if you can get on a run like that you never know where it can take you.

“There’s not much in the games in this division. It’s just that quality in the boxes and if we can get one or two wins we could go on a run.”
