Fleetwood coach Steve Eyre says Cian Bolger is in Town boss Joey Barton's plans but he is not surprised the centre-half is attracting attention from the division above.

Eyre: Wes Hoolahan is exploring options outside of Fleetwood Town

Bolger is in contention to face his old club Leicester City in the second round of the League Cup tonight.

He missed the 5-0 win at Scunthorpe due to a family bereavement but was back on the bench for Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Charlton.

Eyre is not shocked by the interest in the ex-Southend man and said: “It is understandable because we are talking about two seasons of form for Cian.

“I think he has been one of the best centre-halves in the division. He has had two really good seasons in League One. He is well established and respected across the game at this level.

“Given his age, and the way he defends in his own box and attacks in the other box, he was likely to have potential suitors from a so- called bigger club. We did expect some interest later in the window and that is what appears to have happened.

“If he goes, he goes with our best wishes but I have not heard anything and I have not spoken to the player. He is an asset to us but would be an asset for anyone else too.”

But reports that Bolger (left) is not in Barton’s plans are wide of the mark, though Craig Morgan and Ash Eastham currently occupy the central defensive spots.

Eyre said of Bolger, who came off the bench and lost teeth in the draw with Rochdale: “He is in the plans. He did everything we asked when he came on against Rochdale and headed the ball out of our box several times.

“The worst thing that happened was he was on the losing side at the start of the season. Competition for places is fierce. Tonight there are opportunities.”
