Pond left the club after 16 seasons and six promotions this summer to team up with ex boss Graham Alexander at Salford City.

The central defender's exit left a void in the leadership department but his fellow 33-year-old Morgan has stepped up to the plate.

Morgan joined from now Championship side Wigan earlier in the summer and the centre half is looking forward to leading Joey Barton's League One team on the pitch this term.

He said: "It’s an honour for me to captain this club, and I’m delighted the manager asked me to take up the role."

And Morgan, who is currently on Town's pre-season tour in Hungary, expects it to be an exciting term as the players continue to gel on tour.

He said: "I’ve been captain before, and it’s something I’ve enjoyed doing. The lads are coming together nicely after a good couple of weeks at home and now in Budapest – it’s set to be an exciting season."

Central defender Ashley Eastham has also been named as vice-captain.

And Barton, who wanted to bring in a new leadership structure on the pitch in his first managerial role says Morgan is a natural leader.

Barton said: “Craig has won multiple promotions, and you can already see the standing he has within the group in such a short space of time. He is a natural leader.

“We’re intent in creating real leadership, with Craig spearheading that as captain, with Ash Eastham appointed vice-captain too.”
