Bowyer's Blackpool bruised but up for the fight

Gary Bowyer says Blackpool's fighting spirit will be key if they are to claw their way up the League Two table.

The Pool manager paid tribute to the character of his players after they fought back from 2-0 down to earn a point against Carlisle last Saturday.

Having dominated large spells of the game – especially in the first half – Bowyer was left to rue a host of chances which went begging and said it was a missed opportunity to pick up a much-needed win.

He said: “We went 2-0 down but the players kept believing in themselves and kept going, so there’s pride in terms of their fighting qualities and spirit, but disappointment and frustration that we haven’t got the three points.

“I think we finished really strongly and that’s all credit to this group.”

The Seasiders have slipped to 18th, having won only two of their opening eight games. The teams they have beaten, Exeter and Yeovil, are both in the bottom four.

But Bowyer insists there is a strong belief among his squad and believes the results will come.

He added: “We saw the same sort of character against Carlisle that we saw at Colchester. We were 3-1 down there but didn’t give up and we scored late on.

“There’s a good belief among them. They look around the dressing room and know they’ve got players who will fight.”

Focus now turns to Saturday’s visit to high-flying Crewe. The Railwaymen sit third, are yet to be beaten at Gresty Road and go into the game on the back of an impressive 2-0 win at Grimsby.

“We dust ourselves down and go again,” Bowyer added. “We’ve scored four goals in the last two games and only got one point, so that’s what we need to keep working on. We just need to piece it together.”
