Bowyer wants Blackpool to build on their momentum

Blackpool enjoyed a positive week last week, picking up four points from two tricky games against Wigan Athletic and Peterborough United.

It saw them climb up to 17th, three points ahead of the bottom four with 13 games still to play – starting at Portsmouth this weekend.

“We’re four unbeaten and we have some momentum back,” Bowyer said. “We’ve got to keep that going now.

“It’s a period of the season where we’ve got to get as many points as we can as quickly as we can to try and ease ourselves at the back end of the season.

“We want to make sure we’re mathematically safe before going into the last game.

“But if you had said to us at the start of the season before a ball was kicked we’d be where we are, I think we’d have taken that.

“But we need luck in these last 13 games. We need luck with injuries and we need luck with decisions.

“We’ve had one penalty all season and in the last four or five games we’ve always had shouts for a penalty but we’ve not had them.

“So you need luck along the way, it’s not just the actual football.”

Blackpool now have competition for places in all areas of the pitch, something that has eluded them in previous months.

With Kyle Vassell coming back into contention for this weekend’s game and Mark Cullen now back in training, Bowyer has plenty to choose from at the top end of the pitch.

He added: “I think it’s been well documented this season that when we’ve been without Mark Cullen and Kyle Vassell, we’ve been crying out for somebody to step up and take responsibility.

“Fortunately for us Armand Gnanduillet has done that in the last couple of games, as has Nathan Delfouneso.

“So it’s been pleasing from that point of view and long may that continue, we’ve got to get goals from everywhere and not rely on one person.

“We’ve got competition in midfield as well so we’re doing well. Jay Spearing and Sessi D’Almeida are pushing for a start.

“You can sometimes fall into picking the same 11 just out of necessity.

“Then there’s times where you have options so it’s about getting that balance right. That’s what we aim to do.”
