Bowyer hopeful for double striker boost

Kyle Vassell (hip knock), Jamille Matt (knee), Danny Philliskirk (ankle) and Jack Redshaw (shins) are Bowyer’s only injury concerns as the Blackpool boss revealed the knee knock midfielder Colin Daniel sustained in the 1-1 draw at Barnet on Tuesday night looks to not be as bad as first feared.

Bowyer’s only fully fit striker at Barnet Mark Cullen scored the opening goal at the Hive but his sublime strike was cancelled out by John Akinde’s injury time leveller.

Midfielder Brad Potts impressed as he was pushed up to support Cullen who left the field early due to cramp.

Of the other injured four forwards Vassell is the most likely to return to the squad after his recurrence of a hip knock sustained in the opening day 2-0 win over Exeter ruled him out of the Barnet game.

But Bowyer did not want to give Saturday’s opposition Wycombe a heads up on who may return and bolster his attack. He said: “What we have got to do is use (Barnet’s late equaliser) as motivation for Saturday’s game.

“We were so near yet so far but it is important that we recover well and get ready to go again.

“We have recovered well and we might get one maybe two back for the weekend.

“Obviously we will know more throughout the course of the day (about Colin Daniel’s knee) but it was not as bad as first feared so that is a bit of a relief.”

Bowyer says he has pinpointed the areas he needs to strengthen and is actively looking to recruit.

The ‘Pool boss says he spent a lot of yesterday on the phone trying to bring in some new players and that he is planning on following up those calls today.

He said: “We are hopeful that we are going to get some bodies back soon.

“It just highlights the need to bring in some more bodies.

“We have four down and it is just unfortunate that all four are strikers.

“It just highlights the need for numbers especially with the window this season and how it is going to be (without an emergency loan system).

“We are certainly hopeful that we can get everyone back involved very quickly.

“I’ve learnt very quickly about the league and realised what we need to add to the team so if we can do that as well that gives us a better opportunity of competing in this league.

“We are working very closely with the medical department all the time and taking advice off them.

“At the moment it is a case of whoever is fit and available at this moment in time.

“You have just got to look at what is available to us and which way we see as the best way to win a game of football.

“The ideal scenario at this moment in time would be to bring a winger in that could play up front or a striker in that can also play as a winger.

“That would certainly create more options for us than just bringing one more player in that has a specific position.

“There were a hell of a lot of phonecalls made yesterday (to try and bring in players) and follow-ups that need to occur this afternoon.”
