Bowyer demanding a strong finish to season

The Seasiders make the 640-mile round journey to Devon tonight to play their game in hand after getting back to winning ways on Saturday with a 3-1 win against Morecambe.

But Bowyer’s men face a difficult task of picking up three points against a Plymouth side who are flying high in second in the League Two table.

But Bowyer, who saw his side lose 1-0 to Argyle earlier in the season, insists his players will not be fazed by the occasion.

“We have shown throughout the course of the season what we are capable of,” he said.

“What we have to do is keep backing that up with back-to-back wins and show the consistency.

“I think anyone in this league can beat anybody, as has been proved. We’ve just got to make sure we finish real strong.”

Pool were dealt a double injury blow last week, with the news that the club’s top goalscorer, Kyle Vassell, is likely to miss the rest of the season with a broken foot picked up after last Tuesday’s 2-2 draw against Barnet.

Fellow striker Jamille Matt also missed Saturday’s game after failing a fitness test on the morning of the match – which handed an opportunity to Mark Cullen, who took advantage by scoring early on for his fourth goal of the season.

Bowyer added: “We’ve had a blow with Kyle Vassell breaking his foot after Tuesday’s game and then Jamille Matt failed a fitness test before the game, so it was down to Mark Cullen to take his opportunity and I think he did that.

“We were able to tinker with our formation at the start and I think we caused a lot of problems for Morecambe as a result.

“We forced them to change their shape and then we adapted our shape at half time and caused them further problems.”

“We thought we got that right in the first half and then at half-time we made the change as well, and it shows you how good they are in adapting to different formations.

“We combatted that, because just before half-time, Morecambe just started to come into it because of their change of shape.”

Argyle notched their 20th league win of the season with an impressive 2-0 victory at promotion rivals Carlisle United on Saturday.

Speaking after the weekend’s match, manager Derek Adams said a 21st victory on Tuesday against Blackpool is already at the top of his agenda.

“We’ve won the most games in the league, which is 20, and I think from that point of view it shows you how well we’ve done,” Adams said.

“You look at this league; it’s a difficult league to do that in. There’s only ourselves and Doncaster who have been able to do that so far. So we’ve put ourselves in a very good position.

“When you’re at home, you want to keep that going. It’s a difficult game against Blackpool because they’re a side who are trying to push into those play-off positions. I thought they played very well at the start of the season.”

Plymouth come into the game in decent form, having won three, drawn three and lost one in their last seven games.
