“I’ve met Gareth a couple of times and he’s a good bloke.
“You’ve seen the passion he has brought to the team already and I think it’s wonderful when you see your national manager turn and celebrate a goal like he did against Scotland.
“He’s got good knowledge but the fact he has been a player and been at that level will help the national team massively."
Southgate stepped up from his role as England Under-21s manager in September following Sam Allardyce's departure after only 67 days in charge.

Bowyer added: “Everybody at Blackpool Football Club would like to congratulate him on his appointment and wish him all the success.
“I’m delighted because he’s a young English manager. I’m convinced he’ll do very, very well for us."
When asked if he would be interested in managing a national side later in his career, Bowyer replied: “It would have to be somewhere hot with a swimming pool.”
