Bowyer backs Blackpool to threaten going forward

The Pool boss has already gone on record to say he wants to bring in another forward player – if not two – before the window closes.

The Seasiders are currently short on options up front following the departure of Kyle Vassell, the man who has finished top of Blackpool’s scoring charts for the last two seasons.

Mark Cullen and Armand Gnanduillet are currently the only two recognised number nines.

However, with Joe Dodoo and Nathan Delfouneso also capable of playing in attack Bowyer is confident his side will cause damage to opposition defences.

“I think we’ve certainly got to be a bit more creative and cutting in the final third, but we do possess a threat up there that’s for sure,” he said.

“I also like our set plays, we look a threat. We’re a big team. Our delivery, especially first half, caused a lot of problems.”

Bowyer was speaking after Pool’s final friendly of the summer at Crewe Alexandra on Saturday, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

That meant the Seasiders remained unbeaten this pre-season as they prepare for Saturday’s first game of the season at Wycombe Wanderers.

“Even at the death, you saw the lads pushing hard to try and get a winner. That’s what they wanted to do,” Bowyer added.

“I’ve said all along pre-season is about getting minutes into your players and making sure you have a fit squad, the results aren’t that important.

“But going into the game the lads wanted to stay unbeaten and they’ve done that. Fair play to them on that.

“From a personal view, I’m delighted pre-season is over and we can get into the real stuff because next week will be a totally different game to this one.”

Two players Bowyer has been impressed with in pre-season are Jay Spearing and Mark Cullen, who are expected to play an important role for the Seasiders this season.

The Pool boss added: “The main thing with Cully is getting minutes because he missed a lot of time last year, but he’s getting there slowly but surely.

“You saw at Crewe, to get 70 minutes under his belt he’s getting there. It will come with playing games.

“For us, we missed him last year and he will be a big player for us this season.

“As for Jay Spearing, he was head and shoulders above everyone on the park at Crewe, he was magnificent.

“He’s come back really well and I think you’re seeing the benefit of him having a pre-season.”
