Blackpool's Bowyer impressed by rival boss Ainsworth

The 5ft10ins, alleged 16-stone forward, dubbed the strongest footballer in the world, opened his Wanderers account in their 1-1 draw with Accrington Stanley on Tuesday.

It will be another physical test for the Tangerines who withstood a barrage of attacks from a giant Barnet side on Tuesday until John Akinde pounced to cancel out Mark Cullen’s curler in injury time.

Bowyer, whose side are unbeaten at home, praised opposite number Gareth Ainsworth for the work he has done at Wycombe in his four-year stint at Adams Park ahead of their Bloomfield Road clash.

He said: “Gareth is another one that has done a fantastic job.

“He has gone straight from playing and into that and with the couple of runs that they have had in the league and with the players he keeps producing his teams are going to be very competitive and we have got to match that.

“I watched their game (against Accrington) the other night and they mix it up.

“We are going to have to be switched on and right on our game again and I think we have just got to concentrate on the level of performance that we have tried to produce so far this season.

“It has been decent. Especially here at home.”

Wycome are level with Blackpool on four points but lie three places below the Seasiders in 14th.

All eyes might be on the bulky figure of Akinfenwa in Wycombe’s forward line on Saturday but the big striker has backed under the radar partner Dayle Southwell, who joined the club from Boston United in the summer, to shine despite failing to get off the mark in the opening three League Two games.

Akinfenwa said: “Dayle does so much work for the team and that doesn’t go unnoticed. He wants that goal because he is used to scoring goals.

“He has 54 goals in two seasons and the net doesn’t change, so trust me Dayle is going to score goals.

“I will tell you now, Dayle will be our top scorer. He has nothing to worry about and we see time and time again in training that he knows where the back of the net is.”

Bowyer however is just concentrating on his side.

He said: “We can only work on what we can control and that is creating as many opportunities as we have been doing and this time finishing them off.

“The other night (at Barnet) was an example of that where we had great opportunities to put the game to bed and we did not quite do that.

“I learnt a lot about their character and the fight that they have, they are all pulling together, having a right good go and fighting for the shirt.”

“I was pleased with that and once you take the emotion away from the late goal and you analyse the game properly that was a massive positive in terms of how they went about it for each other.”
