Blackpool try again for Ward

The Seasiders had a bid accepted for the Huddersfield winger on transfer deadline only for a permanent move to break down over personal terms.

But with the 22-year-old out of favour at the Yorkshire club, it’s understood Pool opened talks about a loan move this week.

Ward is a long-time target of Seasiders manager Jose Riga, who is desperate to add pace to his side.

However, it’s unlikely any deal will go through ahead of Pool’s return to action at Huddersfield’s John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday, when Ward could play for the Terriers.

Ward has featured seven times this season but has been told he can leave the club due to his high wages and his desire for a long-term deal when his contract runs out in the summer.

He has seen more first- team action since Chris Powell became manager, making cameos from the bench against Middlesbrough, Wigan and Leeds.

Ward was one of three names Riga highlighted in a meeting with chairman Karl Oyston last week as Pool aim to build on their recent upturn in form.

The Gazette understands the manager is anxious to sign at least three more players, his top targets being Ward, an overseas striker and a central defender.

Riga put his squad through a double training session yesterday as they prepare for action after the international break.

Sergei Zenjov returns to training today after international duty with Estonia, which included Sunday’s defeat to England in Tallinn.

Blackpool expect to be virtually at full strength this weekend, with Joe Lewis set to return in goal after missing the win over parent club Cardiff City.
