Blackpool striker Philliskirk's happy habit of late heroics

Stoppage-time specialist Danny Philliskirk says his coupon-busting equaliser at Walsall felt like a winner for Blackpool.

The striker pounced four minutes into added-time to earn Pool a 1-1 draw, cancelling out Tom Bradshaw’s second-half header.

And Philliskirk revealed that his second goal in three games since signing from Oldham has continued a handy habit.

“I have scored nine this season and four of them have come in stoppage-time,” he said.

“It was a great feeling to score such a late goal on Saturday, although I wish it was a winner. To be honest, it felt like a winner to grab a point so late on.”

While the point did little to ease Pool’s relegation worries – they remain 19th and just a point above the League One drop zone – it was one few expected away to a Walsall side who would have gone top had they held on for victory.

But Philliskirk seemed to thrive on Pool being huge underdogs and said: “We’ll have ruined a lot of coupons with that late goal, I think.

“Everyone was expecting Walsall to win and was writing Blackpool off, so we had nothing to lose. But the manager believes in us and all the staff do too.

“I thought we were a little bit negative first half but we had some really good chances. I thought overall we deserved the point.

“The boys are doing well. Last week we won 5-0 and there’s a good team spirit now.

“When things were going against us at Walsall, we really stuck together and got what we deserved in the end.

“That could be a big point at the end of the season.”

The 24-year-old has won one, drawn one and lost one in a Pool shirt since his £75,000 move, and he admits the two goals have helped him settle in.

“We have had two good results now and we want to carry it on,” added the Oldham-born frontman.

“When you come to a new club there’s pressure but I’m working hard.

“Luckily I got myself in the right position for the equaliser. The ball fell for me and I was able to tuck it away.

“The two goals have helped me massively and the 5-0 win really helped settle me down.

“I thought that even in my first game against Port Vale we played really well, even though we lost.

“We are showing positive signs now.”
