Jay Spearing says he will be indebted to Blackpool manager Gary Bowyer for having belief in him.

The midfielder, who captained Bolton Wanderers to promotion from League One last season, found himself reassessing his options at the end of the campaign while he was out of contract at the Macron Stadium.

But he was left in limbo when certain proposals didn’t materialise as planned meaning, for the first time in his career, pre-season came and went without having a team to regularly train with.

Spearing’s relationship with Bowyer, who he worked under at Blackburn Rovers for three months, was constant throughout that period, though, and the invitation was always there for a man of his experience at Bloomfield Road.

The 29-year-old eventually signed on the dotted line at Blackpool at the start of October and he has since gone on to make 14 appearances for the Seasiders.

“Sometimes it was hard for me to go the gym on my own and do work like that, but I knew that at some point somebody would have the belief in me to come in and work, and thankfully Gary has,” Spearing said ahead of today’s home game against Plymouth Argyle.

“He’s done wonders for me. I was at Blackburn with him before here and I got on with him really well.

“Before I went there he spoke to me for a week or two about how he wanted me to get involved, and that got me excited about working with him.

“It was a three-month loan that I really enjoyed, and we kept in touch from then. He’d ring me about what the script was, where I was going and if my family were OK.

“Come the summer he was on the phone asking me about players and asking me what was going on.

“He’s brought me in when things obviously weren’t going as well as I’d have liked them to.

“He’s looked after me and I need to repay him. I’m working hard every day in training and games to do that.”
