Blackpool goal a bonus for buzzing Mellor

Mellor overcame his ankle injury worries to tap home his seventh goal of the season at the Priestfield Stadium to crown the Seasiders’ fourth straight win.

Mellor insisted he was simply relieved to be back on the pitch and said: “I got 20 minutes and I was just buzzing to get those 20 minutes.

“It has been frustrating for me recently because you just want to be out there playing, so it’s great just to be back out there. The goal was just a bonus.

“The main goal was to get the three points. Obviously it was nice to score but for me the most important thing was just to be back out there and to enjoy it.

“I can’t even remember what happened with the goal. But the gaffer always talks about his wingers getting into the box and getting on the end of things, and fortunately I was able to do that with an open goal after Armand (Gnanduillet) had pulled it back.

“It’s been five-plus weeks now but I’m willing to give it all I can for the rest of the season and see where it takes us.”

Blackpool’s win on Saturday meant they are mathematically certain to line up in League One next season.

In fact, Blackpool are the only club in the division who cannot be promoted or relegated with two weeks of the season remaining.

Pool now turn their attention to their remaining games at home to Shrewsbury Town and away to Rotherham United, with Gary Bowyer’s side looking to clinch a top-half finish.

Mellor, who felt Blackpool were more than worthy winners in Kent, insists he and his team-mates’ only focus is the next game.

Mellor added: “I thought we controlled the game, especially first half. Second half we had to dig in a bit but all round we did well.

“The gaffer was saying before the game it was back in 2010 when the club last won four on the bounce, so it was great to get that off our backs.

“Now we’ve just got to take it game by game. Obviously there are only two games left but we’ll just take the momentum and carry on from where we left off.”
