LUKE Varney is set to miss out on a reunion with his former team-mates – the Portsmouth frontman is suspended for Saturday’s clash with Blackpool.
Varney was shown a straight red card towards the end Pompey’s defeat at Hull.
The striker, who spent last season on loan at Bloomfield Road from Derby, is due to serve a three-match suspension, starting with the match against Pool at Fratton Park.
However, Portsmouth are considering an appeal which, if successful, could allow Varney to play.
“I am not convinced it was a sending off,” said Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill.
“‘I have asked the referee to consider looking at it again because it’s not a straight red. If he does do that, I will give him huge credit.
“I think it’s harsh. Luke is not that type of lad – he hasn’t got an ounce of malice in him.”
Varney scored five goals for the Seasiders in the Premier League last term but then returned to Pride Park. He signed for Portsmouth for £750,000 during the summer.
