Alan Thompson admitted Blackpool were left shocked after skipper Tony McMahon asked to leave.
The defender said he was relieved to leave struggling Blackpool after he joined League One side Bradford on loan until the end of the season.
And Pool’s assistant manager Thompson revealed his departure was the result of a shock conversation.
“Tony came into us and asked to leave, that showed he wasn’t on board so we let him go,” he said. “What can you do when your captain is doing that? It’s unusual to have your captain asking to leave but that’s Tony’s decision. I assume he has one eye on earning a deal at Bradford, his contract is up.”
McMahon, 28, played under three different managers during 14 troubled months at Blackpool, making 51 appearances.
