The 31-year-old was replaced by Matty Virtue at the interval after being involved in a collision during the first half.

The Seasiders badly lacked Spearing's leadership qualities in the second period as Gillingham completed a remarkable turnaround, snatching the three points with the last action of the game.

It condemned Grayson's side to another costly defeat, their seventh from their last nine league outings.

When asked if he will look to shake up his side for the weekend trip to Bristol Rovers, Grayson said: “We will see how everybody is.

“Jay had to come off at half time with a bit of concussion so I’m not sure if that will rule him out for the weekend - we’ll have to analyse that.

“But when you lose a game and make individual mistakes like we did, then you have to rectify it by maybe making changes again.

“What we’ve tried to do with the players is allow them to go out and express themselves and enjoy themselves.

“In the second half we didn’t do that enough, we didn’t take the game to them. Instead we looked quite comfortable to win the game 1-0. But then the errors have cost us.

“We’ve just got to see where it takes us. We’ve got to look and analyse the game but players have got to take responsibility for their mistakes as well.

“It's not an ideal run.

"But if we had picked up four points out of six we would have been quite comfortable and happy with that and move on to the Bristol Rovers game.

“I thought the crowd were good in the first half when we were on top but obviously it made it a bit more difficult in the second half.

“We’ve just got to work hard, there’s no other way of getting through this sticky spell.

“As players, and as staff, we’ve all got to take responsibility and look at what we can do better.”
