BLACKPOOL winger Matt Phillips will realise an ambition when he gets his first Hampden experience on Saturday - and he wants to fulfil a childhood dream by reaching the World Cup finals.

Phillips has heard great things about the atmosphere at Scotland’s national stadium as he bids to make his home debut in the opening World Cup qualifier against Serbia.

And the 21-year-old believes the support can fire Scotland to a flying start against the Serbians, and Macedonia three days later.

Phillips, who made his debut in the 5-1 defeat against the United States in Florida, said: “I have yet to experience the atmosphere of Hampden Park but I know from speaking to people who have experienced it that it is something special.

“I can’t wait for these games to come and the preparation starts now. “The supporters will be huge for us in these two opening games.

“ I have heard all about the Hampden Roar and I can’t wait to hear it for myself on Saturday.

“The players will be doing everything they can to get off to a good start and the fans can definitely make a difference.

“I wouldn’t like to walk out of the tunnel knowing our opponents have that kind of backing.”

Phillips, who qualifies for Scotland through the grandparent rule, said: “France ‘98 was the first World Cup I remember as a kid and, of course, who can forget seeing the whole Scotland squad come on the pitch in their kilts before their game against Brazil?”
