“I THOUGHT I may as well just have a go” – well, that’s one way to describe a strike already odds-on to win goal of the season.

Kevin Phillips brought the home fans at Bloomfield Road to their feet with a scorching shot which rescued a point against Cardiff.

Pool weren’t at their best against the Bluebirds but Phillips certainly was.

However, his description of his moment of brilliance didn’t exactly do it justice.

The modest frontman said: “Basically, I didn’t see anyone in the box so I thought I might as well have a go.

“You can make yourself look silly – that’s happened plenty of times throughout my career. Sometimes they go into row Z.

“I was just trying to put it over the keeper and into the corner. I just thought, ‘Hit the target’ and it ended up being one of those wonderstrikes.

“It’s up there (with the best I have scored). It came off but on another day I’d have looked stupid.”

Phillips has now scored five goals in seven games ... and he isn’t finished yet.

“I always said I was confident I would score goals at this level,” he added.

“I have to thank the manager for not being concerned about my age (38). I think I will score more, but I know I’ve got to keep producing the goods because I’ve got people behind me who want to take my place.

“I have set myself a goal target. I’ve done it throughout my career because it gives me something to strive for.

“I’m not saying what it is, but if I keep going at this rate I’ll get there. But I won’t get carried away because a lot can happen in football.”
