LUALUA was given a standing ovation when he was brought off – and according to Ian Holloway it was totally deserved.

Despite not being 100 per cent fit, the frontman lasted 76 minutes at Leeds and scored two goals, the second of which was simply sublime.

Picking up the ball on the edge of the area, he lashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

It was LuaLua’s full debut and Holloway was delighted. The boss said: “He still needs to get a bit fitter but he has some skills and tricks that I felt were needed. “We are going to need everybody. I am going to need a big man somewhere along the line. We haven’t got one yet.

“But LuaLua was terrific and what a fantastic effort that second goal was.

“We needed that goal from him because Leeds had a great spell after the break and they deserved something for it.

“I felt Leeds showed great spirit. They kept going and Simon’s players did him proud at the start of the second half. It is not easy with ten men, but they closed us and got it back off us, and they probably had the better of it for 25 minutes.

“We managed to ride it out and LuaLua’s second goal (Pool’s fourth) was important.”

LuaLua, 30, has been on a special training plan for the last fortnight to get him up to match fitness.

The frontman, who has previously played in the Premier League at Portsmouth and Newcastle, came off the bench for Pool at West Ham and Burnley before his first start last night.
