DAVE Bamber is one of the most famous and popular number nines in the history of Blackpool Football Club - and the same number has a resonance when it comes to golf.

He plays off nine on the course, and is hoping to put his prowess to good use during a charity golf day he’s hosting in aid of Diabetes UK.

Bamber earned a place in the official Seasiders’ Hall of Fame for his exploits in the 1990s – he retired from soccer in 1994 after making 438 appearances, scoring 148 goals.

In a varied career, he also played for Coventry, Walsall, Portsmouth, Swindon, Watford, Stoke and Hull, but it is for his scoring deeds in a Blackpool shirt that he is best remembered, making him a huge fans’ favourite.

Now 52, he works in the property business, and plays most of his golf at Blackpool Stanley Park.

Bamber describes himself as a fair-weather golfer, preferring to play in the summer months, rather than enduring an unequal battle against the elements in the deepest recesses of winter.

He took up golf when he was around 25.

Bamber, who expects his handicap to drop to eight soon, said: “I used to play with Jeff Chandler and Colin Greenall when I was at Blackpool, and when I was at Swindon I often played with Colin Calderwood and Jimmy Quinn.

“Colin Greenall was always a very keen golfer when we played together at Blackpool.

“If I ever played Colin for a fiver as a side-bet, I would always beat him. If there was money at stake he was never as good – if there was no money at stake then he was 10 shots better than I was!”

To continue the footballing theme, another former star entering the competition is Greenall himself.

Greenall is now employed by FA on the coaching side, and his son Nick works for Bamber in his property business.

The charity golf day is being held at the Village hotel Herons reach on Tuesday 14th June 2011 to raise funds for Diabetes UK Fylde Coast Childrens support group.

Entry costs £65 per person and includes; a round of golf on the championship course, morning refreshments and entry to the presentation evening with hot buffet and entertainment.

Additional tickets may be purchased for the Presentation evening at the cost of £20 per person.
