Ten years ago today, the Seasiders kept in touch with the Championship play-offs with an emphatic 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest...

This 13th victory of the season at Bloomfield Road was crucial given results elsewhere, and keeps the Seasiders in with a real chance of joining the play-off party.

Pool visit Peterborough next, while Swansea have Sheffield United away – not easy by any stretch of the imagination – while Leicester City go to Preston.

In a sentence never before written in this publication, come on you Lilywhites!

If Pool can force their way into the top six – a big if (it’s always better to have points on the board than to be chasing) – they may well face Forest again.

And after becoming the first club to do the double over them this season, they would certainly approach the fixtures with confidence.

In this encounter, things became a little nervy at 2-1, when the contest got more than a little lively and tempers flared.

It was during this spell that Charlie Adam picked up a caution which leaves him one booking from a three-match ban – hardly ideal.

But DJ Campbell’s lovely strike towards the end finally eased the tension and made sure of the points.

Forest made five changes, resting some key figures, while Pool made just one: Brett Ormerod in for Ben Burgess.

The atmosphere from the start was terrific, all four sides of Bloomfield Road filled with fans for the first time in more than a decade.

The home support held its breath five minutes in, when Alex Baptiste rather forcefully knocked Joe Garner to the ground as the striker ran into the penalty area.

Many refs would have given a penalty. Anthony Taylor didn’t, a decision which left Forest boss Billy Davies peppering the air with expletives.

Salt was rubbed in the wound for the visitors when Pool were awarded a spot-kick on 31 minutes, Seamus Coleman tripping over David McGoldrick’s trailing leg as he burst into the area.

Adam shrugged off memories of his last penalty– a miss against Ipswich at the start of the year – to send Lee Camp the wrong way. Goal number 17 for the Scot.

It stayed that way until half-time, a half probably edged by Forest, a big and physical unit who defend well and are dangerous going forward. McGoldrick went close and Dele Adebola missed from point-blank range.

Thankfully Pool extended their lead eight minutes into the second period. Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Stephen Crainey did well on the left and Campbell finished left-footed through a crowd of players from 14 yards. A nice moment for a frontman who always gives his all.

Forest hit back when some loose marking allowed Joe Garner to ghost in unmarked to head Chris Cohen’s free-kick past Matt Gilks.

There followed a 15-minute spell when Pool were forced into some brave defending and Robert Earnshaw – brought on along with Dexter Blackstock and Nathan Tyson as Davies turned to his big guns – should have scored from close in.

Thankfully, just when it was getting too tense to bear, Campbell popped up with his second goal and the seventh of his Pool stay to seal victory.

It was a delicious strike, Taylor-Fletcher’s pass into the area dispatched arrow-like into the top corner. Again it was with Campbell’s so-called weaker left foot.

Celebrations at the end and quite rightly so. The nerve Pool showed in claiming these three crucial points was impressive.

They stayed calm and brushed away a Forest side which, no matter how many changes the manager had made, was still a very accomplished outfit.

There are now two games to force their way into a shootout for the biggest prize in world football. It’s going to be a hell of a fortnight.
