Northampton Town defender Clarke Carlisle, the former Blackpool and England under-21 international, has quit the game.
Carlisle, the current chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association, said
“It wasn’t an easy decision and the fact of the matter is that my body can’t do what I want it to any more.
Carlisle began his career as a trainee at Blackpool making the best part of 100 appearances in the back four before his transfer to Queens Park Rangers in 2000.
He captained Burnley in the Premier League and also played for York City last year before making the move to League-Two play-off finalists Northampton.
